The Growing Revolution: Lessons in food Security from Cuba

Past event! on Tuesday, 24 April 2012 06:30 PM @ On-Line Event

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990’s, Cuba quickly lost most of their fossil fuel and agricultural imports resulting in widespread food shortages and the breakdown of their agricultural system. In response to the crisis, Cuba underwent a dramatic shift towards low-input, ecological agriculture encouraging more citizens to grow food in rural and urban areas alike. This “experiment” in post-fossil fuel agriculture has produced some very surprising results. What lessons can we draw from Cuba’s experience to increase food security in our own communities?

Down the Garden Path - Cultivating Hope for the Coming Ecological Age

Past event! on Saturday, 05 November 2011 12:00 AM @ VanDusen Botanic Garden, Vancouver, BC

Gardens are the mysterious and wonderful place where human culture and the natural world intersect. Each gardener offers up his or her imagination, vision and skill in partnership with the living, evolving matrix of soil, sun, water, and plants to create these unique and transformative spaces. As gardens have historically been an expression of our perceived relationship to the natural world, many gardeners today are feeling deeply the call to foster relationships of care and compassion for the earth in a time of ecological crisis. Visionary Australian gardener Geoff Lawton claims that “You can solve all of the world’s problems in a garden.” Can gardens be a place of healing and restoration for an ailing planet? From meeting basic human needs to protecting bio-diversity to nurturing human community and a truly sustainable culture, this workshop will take us down a pathway of considering the transformative possibilities that the garden may have to offer.

This presentation is part of the gathering of the AGM of the Master Gardeners Association of British Columbia
