Mission and Vision

The Urban Farmer is dedicated to supporting city residents and communities in the creation of urban landscapes that are natural, environmentally sustainable, and food-producing.

As over half of the world’s people now live in cities, we believe that urbanites can and must play a key role in promoting environmental sustainability, food security and bio-diversity through the choices that they make “in their own back yard.”By designing the urban landscape along ecological principles, cities will become healthier, more enjoyable and more sustainable places to live.

Values

The Urban Farmer is committed to practices that exemplify and promote environmental sustainability:

  1. Organic Methods

Landscape design, construction and maintenance are carried out using organic gardening and landscaping principles and techniques. Synthetic chemical herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers are not used in our work. We believe in a very strong link between healthy soil, healthy plants and healthy people.

The Urban Farmer is a member of the Society for Organic Urban Landcare.

  2. Wise Resource Use

We give priority to using locally developed materials, materials with a low environmental impact, and, when appropriate, recycled materials. We employ gardening and landscaping techniques that use resources wisely and that recycle “waste” materials whenever possible (i.e. composting, mulching, water collection, limited use of fossil fuels).

  3. Respect for Diversity

We value supporting our clients in their own learning and skill development in sustainable gardening practices. Just as we value bio-diversity, we recognize and respect the diverse backgrounds, interests, aesthetic tastes, and residential situations that our clients represent and we will work diligently to shape our services to our clients’ needs, rather than adopting a “one size fits all” approach.

The Urban Farmer draws inspiration from the fields of organic gardening, edible landscaping and permaculture design. Please select below for information and links on these three topics:
